NOTE: While I THOUGHT I read about something similar, I couldn't find it during a quick scan... so, sorry if it's recently been discussed.

VERY warm in Denver today (the old mercury on my Formotion Thermometer was reading 80 in some places!) so I went out for a ride. After about 2 hours cruising around... some foothill twisties, some city stop-n-go, I pull into my driveway: and I could NOT get it into neutral! Just kept jumping either past 1st into 2nd or past 2nd right into 1st and the shifter also felt "stiff".

With the clutch in and the bike still running I managed to get her turned around in the driveway and drove around the neighborhood, shifting through all the gears. Pulled over and was able to get her to click into neutral. Rode back to the house and, again managed to get her into neutral, but it felt, well... off.

My 'Bird has just over 3600 miles, had it's first service on schedule, plus I changed the oil again at 1500 miles.

Anybody report anything similar?

Check the shift linkage to make sure it's tight and or nothing has moved. And then check the free play in the clutch lever. If the clutch isn't releasing properly,it will be difficult to find neutral and or find furst gear without a big clunk. Dave!!!

Doubt it would be the day temp, we ride regularly in 90-95 with no probs. Is the oil still nice and clean?

Unless you mean 80 C

You may have already done this Narsisco but....

Had the same problem the other day (mine has 16,500 miles or so) - just adjusted the clutch cable at the handle bars everything fine now. Takes only a few seconds.

Hope it works

I only mention the temperature because it was SO nice I had to play hooky from my workload and go ride.

Yep... that was it! My bike has been SO trouble-free that I didn't even think to check the clutch cable yesterday... just went back out after reading this and one look showed that the thumb screw had vibrated a bit loose. I just took up the slack and it's now fine. Definitely a "DUH" moment for me.

Thanks to everyone for the very quick replies!

When I exchanged the Chrome for STORM side casings, I had the same problem - I COULD NOT put the bike in 'N' once it was warmed up!

I started to panic!

Then I played around with the cable adjustment and made sure there was very little slack and fiddled with the clutch lifter arm on the casing.
Hey presto! It's working fine now!

So to sum it up:

- moved the Clutch lifting arm ONE TOOTH in direction of cable pull.
- clutch cable adjuster on handle bars set to pull up ALL looseness.

I was like night and day! It work instantly from the moment I pulled away! I still find it hard to believe that such a SMALL adjustment made such a difference!
